Another Reading Slump? How Novel.
Hi friends! I’ve been coming back to this page to write the newsletter for the past week, but I have been overwhelmed. With the murder of Daunte Wright a week ago, I have not been in a place to chat about books. Constantly being confronted with how easily my Black life could end is exhausting and I have not been able to pick up any books. My goal this week is to try to find joy in the little things- starting with bingeing the Nanny on HBO MAX.
What Have I Been Reading:
Fat Chance, Charlie Vega by Crystal Maldonado: This book was so good- it was sweet and funny and real. I could not put it down, and if I’ve reached the halfway mark of the month having only read one book, I’m glad this was it. This is the perfect coming of age novel and I’m sure a lot of you would enjoy.
The Sum of Us by Heather McGee: I just started this book over the weekend on audio and can tell it’s going to be one I recommend a lot. I love non-fiction that blends first person narrative with research and stats so this one will be a winner for me.
A Few Links:
The National Antiracist Book Festival is coming up on April 24th. It is remote this year and I encourage you all to get tickets to some panels! I am moderating the panel between Heather McGee (author of The Sum of Us) and Eddie S. Glaude Jr. (author of Begin Again) “On a New America”.
All of my Black women: join me and Loyalty Bookstores for April’s Well Read Black Girl Book Club gathering. This month we are discussing Milk Blood Heat.
Struggling with adulting? Check out the new book from Julie Lythcott-Haims: Your Turn: How to Be An Adult (Ad #partner)
It’s not the first time Simon and Schuster has published racist books. This live is really great in helping to understand how this keeps happening and what is our responsibility.
Until next time,
Sarah
