Black History is American History
Happy Black History Month! We are in week two, and I truly am so excited for everything I have planned this month! Besides continuing to speak out on Black Lives Matter and reading Black authors, 365 days a year, I have several fun things planned for this month with other Black creators. This week I am chatting with Leah Thomas, founder of Intersectional Environmentalist. We’ll talk intersectionalism and environmentalism, why being anti-racist is crucial for all environmentalists and we’ll share book recs. We’ll be chatting Wednesday at 8pm EST on the Intersectional Environmentalist’s IG page and I hope you all can join! And now for the books…
What I am Reading:
While January was a great reading month (17 books!), so far I have only read one book. I’m fine with that and accept the ebb and flow of my ability to read during these times.
I read Ties That Tether, a book I have been looking forward to for months now. It follows Azere, a young Nigerian woman who is torn between finding a husband who is from the same culture, and the (white) man she is falling for. As a fellow West African (though I am from Cote d’Ivoire, not Nigeria), I related to a lot of the push and pull the protagonist felt between her Nigerian culture and her the Canadian culture she had adapted to since immigrating. 4 stars
Next up I hope to read White Teeth by Zadie Smith which I have never read (!!) or maybe This Close to Okay, which I have been wanting to read since I first heard about it.
