Bookish and Black #59
Thank you all so much for the kind words on my last post. It was incredibly difficult to share so I truly appreciate all the kind words.
As I find my footing in this new normal, I keep thinking about this newsletter and how much I miss putting it out. My dream has always been to have a newsletter that people look forward to seeing arrive in their inbox. I hope that’s true for you all. With that, let’s jump back into it.
Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo is one of my favorite books. Since it was released in 2017, I’ve been looking to see when her next release was. Last year she followed her debut with A Spell of Good Things. I haven’t read it yet (though I somehow own 3 copies if you want one…), I know it’ll be a moving story that won’t leave you untouched.
I’m here to announce that I have moved on from Stanley cups. Although I am a suburban mom, I have a lot of Gen Z cousins so I’m basically a trendsetter by association. I’m here to tell you that we are Simple Modern girlies now. Unlike Stanley, it is much lighter AND spill proof. | I finally got Rothy's flats and can’t wait for the weather to warm up so I can wear these with wide legged denim. | I’ve loved House of Intuition ever since I first visited their LA storefront 7 years ago. After losing my mom, I got the Healing candle to help provide some comfort. | I’ve been making my rice with bone broth instead of water as an easy way to sneak in more protein. | As a long time Olipop girlie, I’m here to tell you that Poppi (might) be better? At least the Raspberry Rose flavor which is truly delicious.
Tomorrow is the first day of Black History Month. There are so many books on my TBR that I hope to get to this month. Here are a few from my list!
The List: This book like its going to be fast paced and super fun to read. I really hope to get to it this month- I also think it’d be perfect for a book club discussion.
Come and Get It: Such a Fun Age was everywhere when it was released so I’m really looking forward to seeing how Kiley Reid approached her second book.
The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store: I still haven’t read anything by James McBride (I know I know!) but his 2023 release sounds so good.
Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto: I just read this for a book club in January and it really reframed the idea of rest. Instead of thinking it as something you earn, or do to be more productive, it posits the (unfortunately revolutionary) idea that rest is a human right and we deserve and need it simply because we exist. If you’ve been feeling burnt out or struggling with self-care, this is for you.
Be a Revolution: How Everyday People Are Fighting Oppression and Changing the World--And How You Can, Too: I’m going to an event for this book tonight and am excited to hear from the author.
Black Cake: I read this book in 2020 and absolutely loved it. It was recently made into a show on Hulu and I cannot wait to watch (make sure you read before watching, it’s worth it!).
Dear Black Girls: How to Be True to You: In the world of social media and constant comparison, this book on how to be true to yourself really struck me and I can’t wait to read it.
